Foaling Kit 2026

This year, I wanted to build a kit that actually made sense for where I am with my horses, my setup, and my lease situation. I needed something that could be a grab and go.

A camera setup, a new bag, and a new stethoscope felt like the right place to start. Beyond that, it was mostly restocking the essentials and adding something new: colostrum testing.

Ally Rey has a caslick’s, and some significant scar tissue and labia reconstruction. Due to this scar tissue, my vet and I agreed she’d need a little extra attention leading into foaling. Calcium testing and pH strips give us a reliable window into where she is in that timeline.

I also added a colostrum refractometer to help determine colostrum quality after birth, which was a super affordable tool to help understand what the foal is receiving. I am a distance from my vet, so I need to know as soon as possible if arrangements need to be made elsewhere.

This is my first year using these tests, and honestly, it’s changed how I approach the weeks before foaling.
